Finished Indian CS & IT Academic Reform (Past) Activism book work

Last updated on 2nd Oct. 2020

The ebook work had got done slightly before mid-March 2020 itself (before COVID pandemic lockdown in India).

But the printed book work got interrupted in the last stages (mainly incorporation of ISBN number and some changes in cover pages) by COVID pandemic and associated lockdown.

From sometime in June, I restarted this work. The work proceeded at a slow pace due to various issues including some associated with COVID pandemic (e.g. my insistence on receiving no-contact courier delivery of these books).

Now in September 2020, the printed book work has been completed.

There are 3 printed book versions.

1) Hardback printed & sold by Pothi.com, https://store.pothi.com/book/ravi-s-iyer-indian-computer-science-cs-information-technology-it-academic-reform-past-activis-0/

Given below are pics of delivery of final version of this book (received around 9th July 2020):

2) Paperback printed & sold by Pothi.com, https://store.pothi.com/book/ravi-s-iyer-indian-computer-science-cs-information-technology-it-academic-reform-past-activism-/

Given below are pics of delivery of final version this book (received around 27th August 2020):

3) Paperback printed & sold by Notion Press through amazon.in (as well as Notion Press store and flipkart.com) [amazon link: https://www.amazon.in/dp/1648501397 ]

Given below are pics of delivery of final version this book (received on 25th September 2020):

One small issue remains to be checked and that is that the flipkart.com page for the book (sold by Notion Press seller), https://www.flipkart.com/indian-computer-science-cs-information-technology-it-academic-reform-past-activism-blog-book/p/itm40cec81017a4a, currently shows cover page of an older version of the book. I have been informed that the matter will get resolved in the next two weeks or so.

2nd Oct. 2020: Now the above flipkart.com page shows latest cover page of the book. So the issue is resolved.

Copy: Heartening personal experience of Indian business & industry getting back to producing and delivering non-essential goods in these horrible COVID pandemic times

This post has been copy-pasted on 5th Sept. 2020 from my recent post on another blog of mine: https://ravisiyermisc.blogspot.com/2020/09/heartening-personal-experience-of.html.

For me, one important marker of the impact of COVID pandemic on Indian business & industry, was the late March 2020 freeze on my work on printed version of my 2020 self-published book on Indian CS/IT academic reform. I had submitted a modified version of the book to Notion Press (self-publishing platform company) on 16th March 2020 which completed the review in late March 2020.

But I could not place an order to check out the printed book copy as India had got into a big lockdown and printed books (or at least books like those authored by me) were non-essential items whose production and sale were frozen! Note that ebook version sales were not a problem, if I recall correctly, as there are no COVID pandemic issues for ebook sales.

Over the next weeks & months, slowly India started unlock with e-commerce sites being allowed to sell essential goods. I bought some such essential goods on amazon.in in mid May 2020. If I recall correctly, amazon.in had introduced no-contact delivery even at that time, and so precautions for COVID pandemic were being taken even then.

But printed version of my books including this 2020 book (printed as Print-On-Demand) were not available for sale on amazon.in. They were listed but marked as unavailable or something like that.

So I was directly experiencing how self-publishing industry in India, for Print-On-Demand printed books, was under lockdown.

I think it was in June that self-publishing industry Print-On-Demand printed books started becoming available for sale in India. Note that book copies that had already been printed in the past, may have been made available for sale towards end May 2020 itself as non-essential items ecommerce seems to have been permitted from then onwards. But Print-On-Demand books involve actual printing work to fulfill an order. And so I think these Print-On-Demand books became available for sale a litte later, perhaps in June 2020.

But this particular book of mine - Indian CS/IT Academic Reform - may have got listed as available on amazon.in sometime later - perhaps in July 2020 or so. It had become available on the self-publishing companies' websites (Notion Press and Pothi.com are the two that I use) but not on amazon.in (my Notion Press self-published 2020 book is on amazon.in). I also ordered a hardcover copy on Pothi.com website in June and a paperback copy in July, facing some issues with courier delivery due to COVID pandemic (as I wanted no-contact delivery). It is amazon.in that does a super job of no-contact delivery along with other features like 10 days replacement facility.

I think it is in July 2020 that this printed book of mine finally got listed as available on amazon.in.

But as Anantapur district (in Andhra Pradesh) including Puttaparthi (where I live) started coming under a lot of COVID pandemic issues, including strict lockdowns, in July & August period, I could not focus on my book on amazon.in.

Finally, a few days back on 30th Aug, I placed an order for my book (paperback version) on amazon.in to check whether the modifications I had made on it in March 2020, come out properly in printed copy. Here's the amazon.in page for my book where I placed my order: https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/1648501397 .

I had anticipated that it may take around two weeks for the book to get printed and then shipped to me due to COVID pandemic issues, with shipment period varying depending on where the book was printed.

But I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the book got printed and shipped on 2nd Sept. itself by Repro Books-On-Demand amazon.in seller, in Haryana (a northern state of India). That's just 3 to 4 days after I placed the order!

Now the book is in transit. I have attached a few screenshots of the order and its tracking info.

[To open pic in larger resolution, right-click on pic followed by open link (NOT image) in new tab/window. In new tab/window you may have to click on pic to zoom in.]

I am due to get the book on Wednesday, 9th Sept.

So a paperback book authored by me which I wanted to order in end March 2020 itself to check out whether the changes are getting done properly in printed book, was eventually ordered by me in end August 2020, 5 months later!

In other words, for my own self-published books work, I have experienced a kind-of freeze for amazon.in sale, of around 5 months, due to COVID pandemic issues both at amazon.in & self-publishing company end, and at my own end.

The great thing is that now that freeze is over. Yes, the COVID pandemic continues to rage in India - no question about that. India now has third highest number of COVID cases in the world. But, for my paperback book self-publishing work at least, now the people/companies in the chain of order - production - delivery have figured out how to work in COVID pandemic with suitable precautions, and with permission from government authorities, are able to produce and deliver the book. [I have yet to get delivery of the book but given that it is an amazon.in delivery, I am quite sure it will be just a matter of a few days before I get it (as a no-contact delivery).]

I find this to be a very heartening example, based on my personal experience, of Indian business and industry getting back to producing and delivering non-essential goods (besides producing and delivering essential goods), with suitable precautions, in these horrible COVID pandemic times. So I wanted to share this with readers.

=============================

In a private conversation with a person on above contents, the topic of counting the numbers for this book, came up. The content given below are based on my responses to that.

About counting the numbers: My paperback book sales for purchases by others not me, of all my books, are virtually zero. My first two books self-published in 2018 and 2019 have had perhaps one or two or three purchases each!

However, the free ebook downloads for my 2018 & 2019 books have been perhaps in hundreds across various sites that I have uploaded it. This 2020 book has a very niche audience and so its downloads are lesser but I am seeing some full-read stats on ResearchGate for it.

I will see if I can get a proper report of these ResearchGate stats to share with you.

But still I am making a lot of effort towards paperback publication! Why? Well, as of now, I find it very convenient to offer paperback copies to those of my friends & family who are interested in the topic.

Further, in future, if some persons want to have paperback copy of these books (instead of free ebook download), they can very conveniently order it on amazon.in at minimum price (Not-for-Profit for me as author).

----

Above pic: Research Gate stats for my 2020 book (free ebook version) - 41 reads including 15 full-text reads - don't know what exactly that means, and don't know if these reads include reads done by me while checking that the upload has been done properly.

Above pic: Blogger stats for free ebook download page of this 2020 book which includes my own views - total 131 views.

I have uploaded free ebook version of this book on many other sites (archive.org, self.gutenberg.org etc.) - I think there would be some downloads/reads there too.

So I think we can say that downloads of free ebook version of this 2020 book of mine (Indian CS/IT Academic Reform ...) is in hundreds.

Academic Reform is a super-sensitive topic - very few want to publicly criticize teachers (privately they may say a lot but publicly they will prefer to keep quiet). So I don't think this book of mine will move "fast".

However, these views of mine are now very easily accessible on the Internet and printed copies are also available. So future activists like me-in-the-past (now I am no longer into that CS/IT academic reform activism) can easily find my stuff when they search for such matters. That has been the main objective of my putting in the work to convert the blog into a book - handing the work down in a convenient format to future activists in this area.

ISBN 978-93-5407-945-0 allotted for A4 size Paperback Indian CS & IT Acad. Reform Activism book

Last updated on 3rd July 2020

isbn.gov.in, the Indian government agency that allots ISBN numbers, has allotted ISBN 978-93-5407-945-0 (without hyphens: 9789354079450) for the paperback version (A4 size) of my book: Indian Computer Science & Information Technology Academic Reform (Past) Activism Blog Book. Note that recently I had got the ISBN for hardback (A4 size) version of the same book.

The pic below shows the allotment details.

[To open pic in larger resolution, right-click on pic followed by open link (NOT image) in new tab/window. In new tab/window you may have to click on pic to zoom in.]

I must add that this application process went through very fast. The first level ISBN application (new application) was done today, 1st July very early morning at 00:35. I was informed by email of approval of first level application around 1.34 PM today (1st July). I submitted the 2nd level application around 3 PM today. When I checked isbn.gov.in portal around 9.50 PM today (1st July), I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the ISBN had been allotted! So the whole process got over within 22 hours (or slightly lesser if ISBN had got allotted by 5 or 6 PM itself). Note that there is no email typically from isbn.gov.in for allotment of ISBN. I have to login on their website periodically and check if it has been allotted.

Now I have to add the ISBN number in the title-verso page of the paperback book, use Pothi.com cover creator tool to generate an ISBN barcode which will go in the back cover of the book, add price info. to back cover, and then submit the changed cover page and interior book contents for paperback book to Pothi.com for review. I hope to get that done in the near future.

National Digital Library of India (hosted by IIT Kharagpur) lists my 2012 arxiv.org paper on improving practice of software development in Indian academia, for suitable search terms

The cropped screenshot given below which was taken today (early hours of 26th Jun 2020), captures the matter.

Hmm. Quite surprising that NDL India, https://ndl.iitkgp.ac.in/ , chose to put it up! I don't know when they put it up. Maybe it had been put up in 2012 itself but I had not noticed it in my searches on NDL.

Anyway, good to know that my views on the matter are easily accessible now through NDL which I think is India's top digital library, and is funded by Govt. of India.

Note that the above mentioned arxiv.org paper of mine is a pre-print paper which has NOT been published in any peer-reviewed academic publication.

draftable.com has a great online tool for comparing text of 2 PDF files

Here's a great online tool for comparing text of 2 PDF files: https://draftable.com/compare

In its comparison results it shows both files side by side with a common synchronized scroll bar [older file is supposed to be provided first and is shown on left; newer file is shown on right]. The scroll bar shows area with differences in green and green is the colour used to show the different area (text) in one file. [See pic below.]

[To open pic in larger resolution, right-click on pic followed by open link (NOT image) in new tab/window. In new tab/window you may have to click on pic to zoom in.]

[In my case, there was only additional text in one file (and that too only in one line of one page). The help file says that removal of text is shown in red colour, and addition of text is shown in green colour.]

Note that the help file says that only the text in the two PDF files are compared and not images. However, one can physically view the images in old and new files by scrolling to those pages and check manually whether the images look the same.

Also, the help file says that formatting changes (e.g. bold font instead of normal font) are not shown. Hmm. That's sad.

ISBN 978-93-5406-538-5 allotted for Hard Bound Indian CS & IT Acad. Reform Activism book

Last updated on 3rd July 2020

isbn.gov.in, the Indian government agency that allots ISBN numbers, has allotted ISBN 978-93-5406-538-5 (without hyphens: 9789354065385) for the hard bound version of my book: Indian Computer Science & Information Technology Academic Reform (Past) Activism Blog Book.

The pic below shows the allotment details.

After long break due to COVID pandemic, I have resumed my book work; Applied for ISBN for hard bound Indian CS & IT Acad. Reform Activism book

It was on 13th March 2020 that I had placed the order for my first copy of my first hardback/ hard cover/ hard bound book: Indian Computer Science & Information Technology Academic Reform (Past) Activism Blog Book. Note that I had first published the paperback version of it.

Hard bound books have the potential to be in good shape for longer period of time than paperback. It is bulkier. It is also slightly more expensive (Rs.377 + shipping at Pothi.com, https://store.pothi.com/book/ravi-s-iyer-indian-computer-science-cs-information-technology-it-academic-reform-past-activis-0) as against the paperback version (Rs.325 + shipping at Pothi.com, https://store.pothi.com/book/ravi-s-iyer-indian-computer-science-cs-information-technology-it-academic-reform-past-activism-).

Hard bound books also take longer to produce (for print-on-demand printing like in my case). So before the 13th March 2020 order got ready to ship, India went into Janata (voluntary) curfew on 22nd March and into lockdown from 25th March, in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic. That froze production/shipping of my hard bound book!

Around a month ago, on 16th May 2020, I received that hard bound book! I have blogged about it here (post published only on 16th June 2020): https://eklavyasai.blogspot.com/2020/06/happy-to-receive-first-hard-bound-copy.html with the post having some pics of the hard bound book.

Yesterday and today, I started doing the next step of the work related to the hard bound book, which was fixing some issues in the cover page, and then applying for ISBN number for it. Given below is the fixed front cover page picture with title text moved slightly to the right.

[To open pic in larger resolution, right-click on pic followed by open link (NOT image) in new tab/window. In new tab/window you may have to click on pic to zoom in.]

I also modified the back cover page to have the description text in a smaller font. Given below is a pic of it.

Note that these cover changes are not yet incorporated in the book sale page. I will initiate that after I get the ISBN for it (more on that is given below).

A little while back today, I completed the ISBN 2nd level application work. Given below is a pic having the relevant data from isbn.gov.in (the Indian govt. agency that allots an ISBN).

I hope to get the ISBN allotted in the next few days time, after which I will add the ISBN number to the book title-verso page as well as back cover page, and also add price to back cover page. Then I will submit the changes to Pothi.com and after review, order a copy to check out whether the changes have got incorporated properly. That would hopefully finish my book self-publishing work for the hard bound version. I still need to get ISBN for Pothi.com paperback version of the book which is what I will do after the hard bound version work is finished.

Happy to receive first hard-bound copy of my Indian CS IT Acad. Reform book for which order was placed before lockdown

Last updated on 17th June 2020

Note: This post was composed around 16th May 2020 but kept as a private post. I am publishing it now on 16th June 2020.

I am happy to share that today (16th May 2020) I received the first hard-bound copy of my book: Indian Computer Science & Information Technology Academic Reform (Past) Activism Blog Book. I had placed the order on 13th March 2020 as is shown in attached Pothi.com order partial screenshot info. (with some info. blanked out). The Hard-bound (Hard Cover) book (as against paperback book) takes 8 to 10 business days (as per Pothi.com) to get processed (printed & bound) and so I think that as per original schedule the book should have got dispatched towards end March.

[To open pic in larger resolution, right-click on pic followed by open link (NOT image) in new tab/window. In new tab/window you may have to click on pic to zoom in.]

But India got into Janata (voluntary public) curfew on March 22nd and lockdown started on 25th March which would have frozen my book production (Print-On-Demand) work. Phase 3 of the lockdown started on 4th May 2020 during which some relaxations were provided for non-essential items like books in areas which are not in red zones/containment zones, and so I think this hard cover book copy work would have picked up from where it had been frozen. It got dispatched on 8th May 2020 by Indian government postal service Speed Post and I got delivery of it today 16th May 2020.

I must also mention that new orders for this hard cover book, https://store.pothi.com/book/ravi-s-iyer-indian-computer-science-cs-information-technology-it-academic-reform-past-activis-0 , (or my other paperback books) are not being fulfilled typically as of now by Pothi.com (orders outside Bangalore NOT fulfilled) or by Notion Press, the two self-publishing platform companies that I use for my books.

Of course, I took appropriate precautions by wearing a mask while taking delivery, washing hands with soap after removing the outer package cover and putting it in garbage bag, and soap-washing the scissors I used to cut open the outer package cover. I let the inner contents of the package fall (from a short height) onto the floor, after I cut open the outer package. This way, I touched the inner package only after I had discarded the outer cover and soap-washed my hands carefully.

I am learning to get on with life in Coronavirus pandemic. I am NOT going to allow it to stop me from doing work that is permitted by Indian government authorities. But I decided to share this post, as of now, privately with a few people only as I have some concern that publicly sharing this could get misused by others, and perhaps stop courier and other delivery to Puttaparthi areas outside red zone/cluster containment zone. I may make it a public post some months down the line when I feel that possibility of misuse of this info. by some in the public, is very low.

I have also attached some pics of the hard bound book. As it is my first hard bound book, I can see some needed improvement(s) right away. The hard bound book binding area is clearly visible on the cover. The beginning part of the title text on front cover, starts in this binding area - so that has to be moved slightly to the right to start ***after*** the binding area. I will also now apply for an ISBN for this hard cover book after making required changes to cover of book, and also any inner contents of book if necessary. I had to wait to apply for ISBN till I got the first hard cover copy and checked it out.

I am glad to see that after 25th March when the lockdown started, now on 16th May 2020 I have re-started my book work, which falls in non-essential category of work. I am determined to get back to such work that was doing prior to lockdown, but within guidelines and restrictions imposed or advised by the government of India and/or the government of the state of Andhra Pradesh.

17th June 2020 update

Given below are pics taken by a mid-range mobile (Samsung M21) camera on 17th June 2020.

The two pics below show the binding top and bottom edge in the inner contents part of the hard cover / hard bound book.

The pics below have a comparison of the hard cover / hard bound (hardback) book with paperback book. Note that only the front, spine and back of the cover page of hard bound book is larger than paperback book, but the inner contents of hard bound book have same size as the paperback book (A4 size).

Above pic has hard bound book on left and paperback book on right.

The two pics below show from top angle and bottom angle, how the paperback book size fits exactly with inner content of hard bound book. Only the hard bound book cover pages are bigger than paperback book size.

Indian CS & IT Academic Reform blog book now on amazon.com and amazon.in as Kindle ebook at minimum price that I could set

My book titled, "Indian Computer Science (CS) & Information Technology (IT) Academic Reform (Past) Activism Blog Book" and sub-titled "eklavyasai.blogspot.com (main work years: 2011 to 2014)", is now available as a Kindle ebook on amazon.com and amazon.in at the minimum price that I could set which is Rs.49/- on amazon.in which has resulted in sale price in US Dollar currency as 63 (or 64) cents (0.63 US$).

Here's the amazon.com Kindle ebook link: amazon.com/dp/B086G3KNBL , and the amazon.in one: amazon.in/dp/B086G3KNBL .

While the form in Kindle Desktop Publishing (KDP) for setting the price of the ebook clearly said that Rs.49 is the minimum price for it (in amazon.in store), I checked with KDP support about some free ebooks that I saw on amazon.in and wondered whether I could "sell" my ebook free on amazon.in. I referred them to this free Kindle ebook: https://www.amazon.in/Stories-Tagore-Rabindranath-ebook/dp/B004TPO5JE/ .

In their response, they suggested that the above Kindle ebook might have been published outside of KDP and that they cannot comment on the list price of it.

The way I interpreted their response was that KDP does NOT allow the user to set the price to 0, and that some minimum price (Rs. 49) has to be specified.

As my objective is to do the reasonable thing about making this ebook easily accessible, I decided to publish it via KDP at minimum price of Rs. 49.

Now amazon has a mechanism by which any user (including the author) informs amazon of the same product selling at a lower price elsewhere. I plan to explore that mechanism in the near future where I will inform them of this (same) ebook being sold for free on Google Play, and then see whether that results in amazon lowering price of this ebook on its stores or even making it free (Rs.0).

Given below are some screenshots related to the book listing on amazon.com and amazon.in (and one screenshot related to Google Play).

Indian CS & IT Academic Reform blog book now on Google Play as well as Google Books in PDF and epub formats

Last updated on 24th March 2020

This post is a follow up on my previous post: Indian CS & IT Academic Reform blog book put up on Google Books with full preview and PDF download, https://eklavyasai.blogspot.com/2020/03/indian-cs-it-academic-reform-blog-book.html, dated 11th March 2020 and updated on 12th March 2020.

The title details of the book are:
Title: Indian Computer Science (CS) & Information Technology (IT) Academic Reform (Past) Activism Blog Book
Sub-title: eklavyasai.blogspot.com (main work years: 2011 to 2014)

Initially, around 10 days back, I had put up only PDF format book on Google Books. When I tried to make that available on Google Play, I tripped up on some problem.

In the past few days I was able to revisit the Google Play problem and resolve it with some help from Google Books support. So the PDF got up on Google Play. Then I tried adding the epub file which would provide 'Flowing Text' facility to readers.

The epub file which had been created from original Word document using free software Calibre's conversion facility, tripped up on some validation of epub format on Google Play/Books! That was related to usage of start or value attribute in ordered list HTML tag to start (part of) a list with a number (which is used in Appendix D at the fag end of the book). Eventually I had to make a special version of the epub file for Google Play/Books which did not use start or value attribute and so re-initialized each ordered list-part to 1. That epub file got accepted by Google Play/Books.

Here's the Google Play link for the book : https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=bOXUDwAAQBAJ .

Here's the Google Books link for the book: https://books.google.co.in/books?id=bOXUDwAAQBAJ .

Given below are some screenshots on both desktop and my low-cost smartphone of the book on Google Play and Google Books. I have shared them on this post as a kind-of record about the book being made available (free) on these platforms.

After I added my book to my Google Play items list. Note that download EPUB and download PDF options are provided on right-click menu for book.

On clicking Read on this book in Google Play, one is shown 'Flowing text' by default where pages are typically not separated within a chapter and chapter text flows from one ebook display area to the next automatically adjusting based on ebook display area size. But one can change the default value to 'Original pages' when each page of the PDF file is shown separately.

Screenshots in ebook are shown quite decently. Table of Contents can be opened up from anywhere one is on the book, to jump to any 'chapter'/article.

Above 3 screenshots show how changing display area size results in chapter/article text being reflowed to fit the current size of the display. Note that the page number shown (19/191) refers to PDF page number.

Above 2 screenshots are of Google Books page for this book. The first pic shows that the ebook now is "good" for Web, Tablet / iPad, eReader and Smartphone. It states that "Features" include "Flowing text" (EPUB) and "Scanned pages" (PDF). The second pic shows that Download EPUB option has got added - earlier it showed only Download PDF option.
